For a lot of us poverty is just something we hear on the news happening in other countries.Believe me poverty is closer to you than you think.Any one can be in poverty even the people near you can be in poverty like your neighbors, coworkers even your family members can be in poverty. Poverty is not believed to be in Britain ,but it really is.

People do not believe that poverty is in Britain because most of the media ignore it and most of the politicians do not talk about it because they believe people that are poor just drag the country down or are not productive for the society ,but poverty is really a problem in Britain,30% of people are under the poverty line which shows the poverty is alive and well in Britain, also some of the main reasons of poverty in the UK is that people lose their benefits because the government believe that they could work or the the lose their benefits because the late for their appointment with the DWP for reasons that were not their fault.

Franz Kafka was born into a middle-class, German-speaking Jewish family on July 3, 1883 in Prague,Czech Republic.Franz was the eldest of six children. He had two younger brothers who died in infancy and three younger sisters. All his life Kafka struggled to come to terms with his domineering father. Franz Kafka had a difficult relationship with both of his parents. His mom understood his dreams to become a writer but his dad did not want him to be a writer. Kafka is trying to say that familys can affect the way you act like in the Metamorphosis Gregor had act like he liked working this also happens in real life this happened to Franz. The insect might repersent a person being an outcast just like Gregor in Metamorphosis he was an outcast in his family. The insect can also mean changes because Gregor changed into a insect and his family were not ready for changes

Cedric Essay

In this essay i will be talking about how Ron Suskind uses various language techniques to present the difficulties that Cedric face in his education in part one and two in Ballou high school and M.I.T. Cedric is a kid that has to face lots of problems like bullying, gangs and teachers just to get a good education.
One of the language techniques that Ron Suskind uses is metaphor like when he said “I tell him he is in a race, a marathon.I tell him those people on the sideline are already out of the race, the writer is trying to suggest that Cedric’s education is long and hard like a race, the writer also suggest that the other pupils in Ballou high have gave up on their education when he says I tell him those people on the sideline are already out of the race this can also mean that the other students are just watching the good students like Cedric get a good education because they have gave up on their education. This quote shows that Cedric’s education because he competing with other people and he wants to come first.

The other technique that Ron Suskind uses is personification you can see this when he says, ‘failure is persuasive here, even seductive.’ Here, the writer suggests that in Ballou high it is hard to succeed and the students think it is good to fail, the writer is also suggesting that failing feels nice when he says seductive as this is like when a female seduces a male, the writer also suggest that the students like Cedric are want to do good but they are being persuaded to fail or do bad stuff because of their circumstances and they are all black and poor in a racist country so they believe  that if they do good in school it means that they are like white people and they are betraying their black brothers.

The metaphor “i tell him he is in a race, a marathon. I tell him those people on the sideline” talks about the journey that Cedric has to face to success and get a good education, however this quote “failure is persuasive here, even seductive” talks about how the students at the want to succeed but they are forced to fail because of their colour and status in their country.

Ron also uses language technique like when he says ‘But where i start from is far behind where some other kids are, I have to run twice the distance to catch up’ with this quote the writer is trying to suggest that Cedric has to try harder than the other students not only because of the different work but because of his colour and his status compared to the other kids. This quote also suggest that Cedric is still in the race for a good education but there is more competitors in this race which would make it hard to win this race.

Suskind also uses another language technique when he says ‘Being a minority and a hard achiever means you have to carry extra baggage about who you are and where you belong, that puts them at risk’ Ron is trying to suggest people like Cedric will find difficulty to graduate than white students. The term extra baggage suggest that it will be more hard for people with colour, the metaphor is trying to say that Cedric has a burden an his journey and has to try and carry this the whole way and when you have extra baggage on plane you have pay this shows that Cedric will have to pay to graduate .

The metaphor ‘but where i start from is far behind where some other kids are, i have to run twice the distance to catch up’ talks about how Cedric has come to a new school but he still has troubles to learn and to catch up with the other pupil, however this quote’Being a minority and a hard achiever means you have to carry extra baggage about who you are and where you belong that puts them at risk’ this quote talks about not only about Cedric but about all the students that are of colour in this school and about the difficulty that they face and a community and a unit.

Suskind also uses language techniques in part 1 to describe the difficulty in Cedric’s education, when he says ‘The arduous Odyssey’. The author uses this quote to represent Cedric’s journey and how he faces difficulties in his education and his school. This quote is referring to an ancient Greek myth about how Odysseus went on a long tough journey to finally get where he wanted to be.Ron uses this story to compare with Cedric because he has to battle bullies and local gangs to keep his education going just like the myth. This is compared to Cedric  where failure is nearly guaranteed. The word arduous means a long and dangerous journey which is like what Cedric is going through in Ballou High to get to MIT such as bullying and violence. He also has to work extra by himself outside school to get a decent education which is like a trial therefore emphasising the Odyssey part of the quote which was a tough journey with hard trials along the way.

In conclusion Ron Suskind uses these quotes to explain Cedric’s journey and how his education changes when in one place to another. The quote that I think captures Cedric’s journey was “The Ardous Odyssey.” This is because Of how relatable it is to his journey. The quote is comparing Odysseus as he faced many problems to get to the place he wanted to be. These problems include violence, as he was bullied for being better than the other kids and actually trying, but also because his school Ballou High did not give their students any education which is why Cedric fells like he is behind at MIT even though he is working very hard at home. This is why i think that the quote ‘The Ardous Odyssey,’ describes Cedric’s journey from MIT to Ballou high in the best way, in my opinion.

Mathematics

Mos def criticise the REEL when he says “like I got,16 to 32 bars to rock it,but only 15% of profits ever see my pockets”this shows that even though he is making lots of songs he does not get that much money.

THE REEL

The first rappers criticized institution such as the police and the government.Content is critical of social issues.

REEL is often used is Hip Hop when rappers lie in their songs.Hip Hop was never like this it started when the African slaves came to America with their oral traditions and that was the beginning of jazz, blues, soul and from soul came Hip Hop.The first rappers where Black and Latino teens that were move to South Bronx. The first Hip Hop song was not talking about killing fellow black men and having sex with girls it was talking about social issues like police brutality and the media when hip hop started getting popular by small labels the big labels like Warner Bros and others. The people that were listening to Hip hop the most were white suburban teens because they had the most money also they thought that they were seeing a different culture. After the big labels signed the rapper the lyrics changed, the only reason they changed the words is to make more money because lyrics that are social conscious do not sell the other thing that changed is the why they dressed the big labels cared more about the way they look than their talent. On emcee we were listen to was Kendrick Lamar, the song that we listen from him was called The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice. This song criticises the reel because the rapper Kendrick Lamar rap about stuff that effects the society and most rappers don’t do do this,so this song indirectly criticise the reel. The other thing that he adds in this song is repetition when he says the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice he is trying to say the the blacker you are the better person you are.Kendrick Lamar is from Compton this plays a big part because NWA were from Compton they were also rapping about social issues like police police brutality and racism and i think that Kendrick Lamar was inspired by them because they are black male. The thing that Kendrick Lamar adds as well is satire when he says I’m a proud monkey this shows that even if he gets mocked about being black he still loves being a black male.the other MC we were listening to was akala, akala starts his song by saying sorry to the people that are listening because usually rappers rap about violence. The other way he criticises the reel is when he says”I just thought that killing should not be glorified, silly me Apparently murdering man has become an aspiration”what he is trying to say is that the other rappers brain wash people to believe that killing people and having sex with girls is life but it is not.The other thing that akala is trying to say is that reel rappers just boost about how much jewellery they have but they don’t know the struggle that some one else had to go through to make them have the chains that they have the quote i got for this is when akala says “And you can boast about your platinum chains and your diamond rings While kids in Sierra Leone keep on losing limbs”.He also talks about reel rappers that say that girl are hoes but they still have sex with them this just shows that the reel rappers are just talking rubbish just to get money ,the quote i got for this is when he says “And if women are such hoes that we do not want to kiss them What does it say about us that we want to put our dick in?”.The next MC that i will be talking about that criticises the reel is mos def,in his song mathematics he talks about how big labels take most of the profit ” Like I got, sixteen to thirty-two bars to rock it But only 15% of profits, ever see my pockets”.

Social issues part 2

This quote means that racism is more powerful than material stuff.”So boost about your Prada and your Christian Dior, still security will follow when you’re in the store. The quote that I choose was when he said if a Chinese rapper said die chink die everybody would be like what is wrong with this guy this shows that people have been used to black people saying they kill each other.

Social issues

Social issues are issues which influence a considerable number of individuals within a society. Mick Jenkins uses satire to criticise stereotypes about black men and boys.

Satire in Hip Hop

It is when you use irony to make a point. They would use it to show how black people were killed. The bit that made sense is when he said what rappers would say in their songs.
